Hydro Jetting vs Drain Snaking: How to Choose
Snaking clears a blockage. Jetting cleans the pipe. Here is how a Fullerton plumber decides between them, what each costs, and when jetting is unsafe.

Two tools, two different jobs. Choosing wrong is why people pay for the same clog twice.
What a drain snake does
A cable machine feeds a rotating steel cable into the line. The head either bores through the obstruction or, with a cutter attachment, shears roots and hardened debris. It is fast, it works in tight cleanouts, and it is the correct first move for a toilet clog, a single stopped fixture, or a root ball you need gone tonight.
Its limitation: a cable makes a channel. Grease and soap remaining on the pipe wall start narrowing that channel immediately.
What hydro jetting does
A jetter pushes water through a nozzle at controlled high pressure. Rear-facing jets pull the hose upstream while scouring the full circumference of the pipe, flushing debris back to the cleanout. On a grease-loaded restaurant line or a decades-old kitchen branch, the difference on camera is dramatic.
Choose snaking when
- One fixture is stopped and the rest of the house drains fine
- A foreign object is the likely cause
- The pipe condition is unknown and you need flow restored now
- You need roots cut immediately ahead of a scheduled repair
Choose jetting when
- The line clogs repeatedly
- The cause is grease, soap, sludge, or scale
- It is a commercial kitchen or a commercial drain
- You are on a maintenance interval and want the line back to full diameter
Why we camera first
A camera inspection shows pipe material, wall condition, slope, and defects. Jetting a cracked clay lateral at full pressure can turn a repair into a replacement. Five minutes of video prevents that.

Common questions
FAQs about Hydro Jetting vs Drain Snaking: How to Choose
Is hydro jetting safe for old pipes?
Only after a camera inspection. On sound cast iron, clay, ABS, or PVC it is safe at the correct pressure. On cracked, offset, or heavily deteriorated pipe it can worsen the damage, so we inspect before jetting.
Which lasts longer?
Jetting, on grease, soap, scale, and sludge lines, because it removes the buildup instead of boring through it. Snaking is longer-lasting on a discrete object blockage.
Which is cheaper?
Snaking costs less per visit. Jetting usually costs less per year on any line that clogs repeatedly.
