Why it matters more on older laterals
A smooth, modern PVC lateral tolerates a lot. A clay or cast iron line with root hairs and joint offsets does not, because every irregularity is a place for fibrous material to catch. That is why the same flush habits produce no issues in one house and monthly paper clogs in another.
If it is already flushed
Stop flushing. Additional flushes push the object into the harder-to-reach horizontal run. A closet auger recovers many items from the trap. Beyond that you need a plumber for a blocked toilet with a camera to confirm nothing is left behind.
